Filmmaker Arfat Sheikh Detained by ICE at Dulles Airport

As Arfat Sheikh stepped off his flight at Washington Dulles Airport on September 24, he was intercepted by plainclothes agents who identified themselves as ICE. The award-winning director, who has resided in Virginia since 2019, was taken into custody without a presented warrant, according to witnesses and supporting advocacy groups.

The 42-year-old filmmaker was traveling with author Tara Dorabji to attend an event on art and resistance when the encounter occurred. Dorabji recounted seeing Sheikh surrounded by men in civilian clothes on the jetway, noting that no official documentation was produced during the removal. Sheikh, who entered the country on a student visa and currently has an asylum application pending, was moved to the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia.

Friends and colleagues have launched a campaign to secure his release, citing the lack of a warrant as evidence of unlawful procedure. Supporters are currently raising funds for his legal defense as he prepares for a procedural hearing before an immigration judge. While ICE maintains the authority to detain non-citizens over suspected violations or status reviews, the circumstances of this arrest have drawn sharp criticism from the artist's community, who have circulated footage of the event to challenge the agency's actions.
