African Development Bank Backs Tanzanian SMEs with $10 Million Facility

A $10 million trade finance guarantee, signed in Dar es Salaam on September 28, arms Exim Bank Tanzania with the capacity to shield import transactions from non-payment risks. By securing letters of credit, the African Development Bank Group aims to bolster local SMEs and accelerate Tanzania’s integration into regional markets.

The facility functions as an unfunded instrument, covering up to 100% of payment risks for trade finance tools issued by Exim Bank. This arrangement allows the bank to manage exposure while extending credit to companies in agriculture, manufacturing, and energy sectors. By mitigating these risks, the partnership aims to reduce reliance on external financing and stabilize the flow of essential imports.

Mary Monyau, the African Development Bank’s Country Manager for Tanzania, framed the deal as a direct advancement of the Tanzania Vision 2050 agenda. She noted that the initiative aligns with the 2026–2031 Country Strategy Paper, focusing on private sector job creation and the broader objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area. Exim Bank CFO Shani Kinswaga added that the support provides the necessary financial infrastructure to pursue trade opportunities with greater discipline and confidence, ensuring local firms remain competitive on both regional and international stages.
