Opposition MPs to Formalize Demand for Election Commission Meeting

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has summoned opposition lawmakers to a lunch meeting in New Delhi today, where the group plans to finalize a formal request for an audience with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following a series of tense confrontations between the INDIA bloc and the poll panel.

The gathering follows a volatile protest on October 6, when opposition leaders marched toward Nirvachan Sadan to voice grievances regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. That demonstration, part of the broader Save Democracy campaign, saw participants blocked by police barricades and eventually resulted in the detention of senior figures including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Tensions between the INDIA bloc and the Election Commission of India remain high. While opposition leaders claimed 300 MPs sought an audience with commissioners, the poll panel countered that no official request was received until late afternoon. The Commission characterized the initial approach as unusual, noting that an offer to send a senior officer to receive a memorandum at Parliament House Annexe was ultimately rejected by the delegation.
