INDIA bloc MPs vow to continue anti-CEC protests after detention

“Gyanesh Kumar will regret not meeting us,” Congress leader Pawan Khera declared Tuesday after being released from police custody. The detention of top opposition figures, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, followed a march on the Election Commission headquarters, signaling an escalation in the coalition’s demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.

Opposition leaders staged a sit-in at Akashvani Bhavan, just 100 meters from Nirvachan Sadan, after police barricades blocked their path to the poll panel’s office. The demonstration, part of a wider “Save Democracy” campaign, targeted the Election Commission over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise. Congress members and youth wing leaders were removed by police and held at the New Police Lines in Kingsway Camp.

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav confirmed the movement would persist until Kumar steps down, characterizing the police response to the protest as an infringement on constitutional rights. MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring echoed this frustration, accusing authorities of treating elected representatives like criminals. Despite the detentions, party officials maintained that the crackdown would not deter their campaign to challenge the current leadership of the Election Commission.
