The political standoff escalated on Tuesday after INDIA bloc leaders marched on Nirvachan Sadan to challenge the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by fellow opposition lawmakers, claimed he was being denied an audience with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, the ECI clarified that no appointment was sought by any party until 4 pm, at which point the Delhi Police relayed a request on behalf of a delegation of approximately 240 MPs.
According to the Commission, meeting protocols require parties to schedule appointments through authorized representatives. The ECI further noted that it offered to dispatch a senior official to the protest site at Akashvani Bhawan to accept the opposition's memorandum, an offer Gandhi reportedly rejected. Trivedi argued that the insistence on entering the premises with a large group of 300 MPs, rather than following established procedures, indicated that the demonstration was designed for optics rather than substantive dialogue. The opposition maintains its protest is part of a broader campaign to defend democratic processes against alleged irregularities in electoral roll management.
