Athawale Criticizes Opposition Protest Against Election Commission

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday accused Rahul Gandhi of inciting instability, urging the opposition to halt protests against the Election Commission. Speaking in Delhi, Athawale argued that the INDIA Bloc’s campaign to discredit the poll panel undermines democratic institutions and misleads the public on electoral processes.

The remarks followed a high-tension march in New Delhi, where opposition leaders attempted to reach the Election Commission headquarters. The group, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police intercepted the demonstrators near Akashvani Bhawan, leading to the temporary detention of several key figures.

At the heart of the standoff is the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders argue that the exercise is flawed, citing unauthorized deletions of voter names and opaque changes to administrative forms. While the INDIA Bloc demands the immediate termination of the revision process, the Election Commission has dismissed these claims, asserting that all operations strictly adhere to existing legal frameworks.
