The demonstration, part of a wider opposition campaign dubbed "Save Democracy," began after INDIA bloc representatives were blocked from marching to Nirvachan Sadan. Alongside the Gandhis, police took several senior party figures into custody, including KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. Earlier in the day, authorities also cleared out members of the Youth Congress and the National Students' Union of India from the site.
Congress officials maintain their grievances stem from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which they argue threatens the integrity of electoral rolls. Before his detention, KC Venugopal declared on social media that the party would not retreat until their demands were addressed. Rahul Gandhi escalated the rhetoric, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining democratic processes. Amid the chaos, the Press Information Bureau’s fact-check unit issued a correction, refuting online rumors that the Union Home Ministry had initiated negotiations to end the impasse.
