Opposition targets CEC Gyanesh Kumar amid Kerala corruption probe

Communist Party of India leader Binoy Viswam has launched a scathing attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, branding him a corrupt and authoritarian official. The outburst follows a new vigilance inquiry in Kerala into allegations stemming from Kumar’s 2006 tenure as the state's Public Works Department Secretary.

The inquiry, ordered by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, focuses on irregularities surrounding the suicide of Malaysian civil engineer Lee See Been. The engineer, who worked for a consortium upgrading the MC Road, reportedly named Kumar in a suicide note. Authorities are now investigating claims that an initial 2006 probe was derailed by external pressure, prompting a fresh review of the case files.

While state officials maintain the investigation is not politically motivated and targets Kumar's past administrative role rather than his current position, the timing has intensified friction between the INDIA bloc and the poll panel. Opposition lawmakers, led by Rahul Gandhi, faced barricades while marching on the Election Commission headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan to protest the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Gandhi questioned the Commission’s refusal to meet with 300 opposition parliamentarians, describing the current standoff as a broader battle for democratic accountability. The tension is further fueled by reports that other election commissioners raised internal objections to the current voter roll revision, and a Supreme Court clarification noting that it had not approved modifications to Form 6 used for new voter enrollments.
