Rajasthan BJP Chief Defends Electoral Roll Revision Amid Opposition Protest

Conflict erupted on Tuesday as Rajasthan BJP President Madan Rathore condemned the Opposition’s march against the Election Commission, labeling their resistance to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls as a misdirected attempt to damage the credibility of India’s poll body and question the fundamental criteria for voter eligibility.

Rathore defended the revision exercise, emphasizing that the process aims to ensure only legitimate Indian citizens hold the franchise. He argued that individuals residing in India for employment or business while maintaining foreign citizenship should remain excluded from the electoral process. The BJP leader specifically targeted Sonia Gandhi, questioning the timeline of her past voter registration in relation to her citizenship status, claiming such anomalies would be impossible under current strict verification standards.

The rhetoric follows a tense standoff in New Delhi, where Rahul Gandhi led opposition MPs toward Nirvachan Sadan. Security forces blocked the delegation, prompting a sit-in protest at Akashvani Bhavan. Gandhi accused the government and the Election Commission of obstructing elected representatives, asserting that the protest is a vital component of the bloc’s broader campaign to protect constitutional integrity. The controversy has deepened following reports of internal dissent among election commissioners and Supreme Court scrutiny regarding modifications to Form 6, which remains a central point of contention in the ongoing debate over voter enrollment integrity.
