Fadnavis Labels Opposition Protests a Threat to Constitutional Order

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has characterized recent opposition-led demonstrations against the Election Commission as a calculated campaign by radical elements to undermine democratic institutions. He argues the protests aim to dismantle public faith in constitutional bodies rather than address genuine electoral grievances through established legal channels.

Fadnavis Labels Opposition Protests a Threat to Constitutional Order

The Chief Minister dismissed the ongoing 'Save Democracy' movement, organized by the INDIA bloc, as a political theater designed to replace democratic norms with ideological agitation. Fadnavis specifically countered allegations of police misconduct in Mumbai, labeling claims of suppression as entirely fabricated and insisting that local law enforcement maintains professional standards.

While addressing the tension, Fadnavis acknowledged that some student grievances are valid, noting that his administration remains open to dialogue. However, he warned that those using student platforms for partisan gain would face political consequences. The controversy originated from reports alleging internal disagreements between Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi regarding the SIR exercise. Despite these claims, the Election Commission of India has maintained that all recent decisions were reached unanimously, effectively rejecting the narrative of institutional dysfunction promoted by opposition leaders.
