The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of undermining the nation’s democratic foundations. Gandhi, who led the march to the commission’s headquarters, questioned why Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his colleagues refused to address concerns raised by representatives of millions of voters. The movement, part of a broader 'Save Democracy' campaign, has expanded beyond the INDIA alliance to include parties like the Biju Janata Dal.
Tensions escalated following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised 14 objections regarding the current Special Intensive Revision exercise. This friction is compounded by a recent Supreme Court clarification stating it had not authorized the modified version of Form 6 currently utilized for new voter enrollments. As police and paramilitary forces blocked access to the Nirvachan Sadan, CPI MP P. Sandosh Kumar signaled that the opposition intends to intensify its demonstrations until their grievances regarding the integrity of the electoral process are met with transparency rather than detentions.
