INDIA bloc intensifies campaign to oust Election Commissioner

Opposition leaders staged a high-stakes demonstration outside the Hyderabad Collectorate on Tuesday, calling for the immediate resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest, part of a coordinated national movement, accuses the official of partisan bias and tampering with electoral rolls to favor the BJP.

Congress leader Motha Rohith framed the mobilization as a defense of democratic integrity, alleging that the Election Commission is systematically purging eligible voters from the rolls. The Hyderabad demonstration serves as a precursor to a wider escalation; the coalition plans to besiege the Lok Bhawan on October 8 before moving the protest to Delhi on November 1.

This regional unrest mirrors a significant confrontation in the national capital. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were barred from entering the commission’s office complex, prompting INDIA bloc parliamentarians to initiate a sit-in at Nirvachan Sadan. The opposition maintains that these actions are necessary to address what they describe as the subversion of electoral institutions.
