The standoff occurred after police blocked nearly 300 parliamentarians from the INDIA bloc who marched from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan. Gandhi, alongside Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior leaders, staged a sit-in at the nearby Akashvani complex after being denied entry to the poll body’s offices. The group had intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whom Gandhi accused of complicity in hijacking the nation’s electoral process.
Gandhi’s rhetoric signaled a shift from standard political opposition to a more aggressive confrontation. He explicitly named Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as primary architects of the alleged democratic erosion. While prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remained in force, scuffles broke out between security personnel and Congress cadres attempting to breach the commission's gates. Gandhi maintained that the refusal of constitutional authorities to engage with elected representatives represents a crisis of governance, asserting that the opposition is now committed to dismantling the current political establishment rather than merely countering its policies.
