Opposition march to Election Commission ends in detentions and sit-in

More than 300 opposition lawmakers marched from Parliament to the Election Commission of India on Tuesday, only to be blocked by heavy police cordons and prohibitory orders. The standoff escalated as Congress leaders and INDIA bloc members staged a sit-in, demanding a meeting with officials and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

Tensions flared outside the Nirvachan Sadan as security forces enforced Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. While Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a demonstration at the nearby Akashvani complex, police detained Indian Youth Congress and NSUI workers who had breached the premises. Security personnel, including CRPF and RAF units, maintained a rigid perimeter, preventing the delegation from delivering a formal memorandum.

Congress leader Pawan Khera characterized the police blockade as a sign of government intimidation, asserting that the administration is fearful of opposition scrutiny. The demonstration expanded beyond the core INDIA bloc, with BJD members joining the protest. CPI (M) lawmakers John Brittas and V Sivadasan were among those taken into custody as the coalition vowed to intensify their movement, insisting that the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar remains their primary objective.
