Delhi Police Detain Opposition Leaders During Election Commission March

Opposition lawmakers climbed iron barricades and waved the tricolour on Tuesday as police blocked their march to the Election Commission headquarters. The protest, part of the INDIA bloc’s ongoing campaign against the poll panel, resulted in the detention of senior figures including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and KC Venugopal.

The standoff occurred near the NITI Aayog office, a high-security corridor where police had erected heavy iron barriers to prevent the delegation from reaching Nirvachan Sadan. Despite the blockade, several parliamentarians, including Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, scaled the barricades to continue their advance. Rahul Gandhi successfully reached the commission headquarters, where he later issued a public call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Participants in the march demanded accountability regarding alleged electoral roll discrepancies, a central grievance in the coalition's broader “Save Democracy” movement. Following the detentions, remaining members of the delegation sat in protest on the street near the NITI Aayog office. This confrontation marks a significant escalation in the political friction between the opposition bloc and the election body, signaling a shift toward more direct, street-level agitation over institutional transparency.
