INDIA Bloc Marches on Election Commission Over Voter Roll Concerns

Opposition lawmakers swarmed the streets of Delhi on Tuesday, launching a protest march toward the Election Commission of India headquarters. The demonstration, centered on alleged irregularities in Form 6 and the appointment of poll officials, signals a deepening rift between the INDIA bloc and the country’s top election body.

Congress MP Imran Masood spearheaded the criticism, alleging that the BJP has effectively usurped the commission's role by answering on its behalf. Masood specifically challenged recent, unauthorized modifications to voter registration forms and the legal protections afforded to election officials. According to the opposition, these procedural shifts represent a betrayal of public trust, leading to demands for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress MP Mallu Ravi echoed these concerns, claiming the current poll administration functions as an extension of the executive branch rather than an independent arbiter. As demonstrators moved toward Nirvachan Sadan, they were met with heavy security and multi-layered barricades across Central Delhi. Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav intensified the rhetoric, dismissing BJP claims that the opposition is undermining democratic institutions. Yadav pointed to the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the election commissioner selection panel as evidence of the ruling party’s own interference in constitutional processes.
