Humayun Kabir detained during Rejinagar bypoll

Beldanga SDPO Anandjit Hore took Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir into custody today, citing legal violations as voting commenced in the Rejinagar Assembly by-election. The detention occurred at the candidate's Murshidabad party office, sparking immediate accusations of police interference from the MLA.

Kabir, who resigned from the Rejinagar seat to retain his victory in Nowda, alleged that law enforcement officials have been actively disrupting the voting process. He claimed that police forces have engaged in a two-month campaign of intimidation, resulting in the detention of 64 individuals prior to the current polling cycle. According to the candidate, these actions contradict the constitutional mandate for police to ensure public safety and secure the electoral process.

Hore maintained that the situation remains under control, noting that Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed alongside local units to prevent further unrest. The Rejinagar by-election is part of a broader series of polls across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Election officials confirmed that the results will be tallied on October 9, with the full electoral process slated for completion by October 11.
