Voters head to the polls in Tamil Nadu as by-elections begin

With security forces monitoring sensitive stations, voters in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies cast their ballots today to fill two vacant assembly seats. The process, which began early Tuesday, marks a critical test for candidates from the DMK, AIADMK, and the newly active TVK in the Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts.

District Collector Veerappan confirmed that polling across Madurantakam is proceeding without incident, supported by intensive CCTV surveillance and a full deployment of Electronic Voting Machines. By 9 AM, turnout reached 15.99 percent in Madurantakam and 17.55 percent in Dharapuram, reflecting steady engagement in both rural and urban pockets. The electoral contest features a crowded field of 28 candidates in Madurantakam, including Maragatham Kumaravel of the TVK and the DMK's Paranthaman.

The atmosphere surrounding the Dharapuram race remains charged. AIADMK candidate Bhanumathi voiced confidence in a landslide victory, dismissing viral allegations of illicit spending. Simultaneously, TVK candidate P Sathyabama faced scrutiny over a circulating video, which she characterized as a distorted attempt to undermine her campaign. Both seats became vacant following the resignations of previous incumbents, leaving local parties to fight for control in a high-stakes environment where accusations of voter inducement have already triggered multiple interventions by election flying squads.
