Opposition Challenges Election Commission Over Form 6 Modifications

The Supreme Court’s direct inquiry into who authorized alterations to voter registration Form 6 has triggered a sharp confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission of India. Justices have explicitly stated they never approved the modified forms, contradicting the poll panel’s previous claims regarding the Special Intensive Revision process.

Congress leader Pawan Khera and NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto have accused the Election Commission of misleading the public by invoking the apex court’s name to justify procedural changes. Crasto specifically alleged that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar falsely attributed the modifications to judicial directives. The controversy centers on the Special Intensive Revision, with critics demanding accountability for the deletion of 13 crore names from electoral rolls.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury questioned the Commission’s decision to issue social media fact-checks instead of providing a formal explanation to the judiciary. The ECI maintains that its internal orders, including those for Bihar, were issued with unanimous commission approval and fall within the scope of previous court judgments. However, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant has demanded the production of official records to identify the specific authority behind the modified documentation. The court is currently hearing a petition from advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi, which seeks the prosecution of officials for allegedly unilateral decisions regarding voter enrollment procedures.
