Bypolls test alliances across six constituencies in three states

Polling stations opened Tuesday across six constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry, testing political loyalties in a high-stakes electoral test. Voters are casting ballots for five assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat, with results expected to reveal the strength of shifting coalitions before the October 11 deadline.

In West Bengal, the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies headline the local contests, following vacancies created by high-profile resignations and dual-seat wins. The landscape in Tamil Nadu appears increasingly fractured; although the CPI and CPM maintain support for the TVK government, both parties have fielded independent candidates in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. This five-cornered fight pits TVK incumbents Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama against a crowded field that includes DMK, AIADMK, and NTK challengers.

Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat presents a separate battleground, where the BJP has nominated former Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma to face Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora. The seat, previously a Congress stronghold, now features AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, adding complexity to the three-way race. Meanwhile, voting proceeds in the Puducherry assembly constituency of Thattanchavady. Election officials have confirmed that all ballots will be counted on October 9, with the full electoral process slated for completion by October 11.
