Police detain AJUP leader Humayun Kabir during Rejinagar bypoll

Humayun Kabir, chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, was taken into police custody at his Murshidabad office on Tuesday, shortly after casting his vote. The detention occurred amidst ongoing by-elections in West Bengal, fueling tensions as Kabir accused local law enforcement of actively sabotaging the integrity of the polling process.

Kabir, who vacated his Rejinagar seat earlier this year after winning a parallel contest in Nowda, claimed that authorities have harassed his party members for months. Speaking to reporters before his removal, the MLA alleged that police had detained 64 individuals in the lead-up to the vote, asserting that officers were hijacking booths despite the presence of an established government. He questioned the necessity of such tactics, contrasting the current friction with the peaceful atmosphere of previous election cycles.

Voting for the by-election remains underway in Rejinagar and Nandigram, part of a broader set of polls covering West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Assam. The Nandigram vacancy stems from Suvendu Adhikari’s decision to retain a different seat following the state assembly elections. The Election Commission expects the full process to conclude by October 11, with results for these contests slated for release on October 9.
