BJP Fields Eight Candidates for Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha Seats

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will accompany eight BJP nominees to the Vidhan Bhavan in Lucknow on Tuesday as they file papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The party aims to secure its legislative influence by balancing regional and caste demographics across the ten vacant state seats.

The candidates, including Dharampal Singh, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Ram Pratap Singh, Priyanka Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopikrishna Pandey, Shruti Gangwar, and Prakash Pal, will gather at the BJP state headquarters for a formal felicitation before the 11 AM filing deadline. This selection process reflects a strategic social engineering effort, allocating spots among three OBC, two Dalit, two Brahmin, and one Rajput representative.

These nominations come as ten members from Uttar Pradesh prepare to vacate their seats this November, including Union Minister Hardeep Puri and BL Verma, who were not renominated. The Samajwadi Party has countered by naming Professor Ramgopal Yadav and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani as its own contenders. With the nomination window closing on October 6 and polling scheduled for October 16, the political maneuvering underscores a broader effort to reshape the Upper House composition before the final counting concludes.
