Nandigram Bypoll Marred by Allegations of Voter Intimidation

“Hooligans have been let loose here for two days now,” claimed Congress candidate Milan Pradhan on Tuesday, alleging that his polling agent was forcibly removed as voting commenced for the Nandigram Assembly by-election. The accusation highlights rising tensions in a contest where local security measures face intense public scrutiny.

Pradhan stated that he alerted election officials to the interference, though he reported a lack of adequate response. Despite these claims, Alok Bag, the presiding officer at polling station 79 in Nandanayakbar Primary School, insisted the process remained orderly. Bag confirmed that security arrangements, including mandatory webcasting, were fully operational for the 709 registered voters at his station, with proceedings scheduled to conclude at 6 p.m.

The Nandigram contest is part of a broader day of voting across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Assam. The seat became vacant after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari opted to vacate it in favor of another constituency following his dual victory in the state assembly elections. In the neighboring Rejinagar seat, a bypoll was triggered by the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir. Election officials expect to finalize the results by October 9, with the full electoral process concluding by October 11.
