INDIA Bloc MPs March on Election Commission Over Alleged Partiality

Accusing the Election Commission of acting as an extension of the ruling party, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav led a chorus of dissent Tuesday as INDIA bloc MPs marched toward Nirvachan Sadan to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.

Yadav alleged that the poll panel has abandoned its constitutional mandate, claiming it operates solely to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party. He cited specific controversies in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, arguing that electoral processes in constituencies like Kundarki and Meerapur were compromised. The Samajwadi leader further challenged the commission to name a single instance where it acted on complaints regarding fraudulent voter deletions, such as the case of Nandlal Nishad, where bogus signatures were allegedly used to purge names from rolls.

The protest gained momentum following a sharp observation from the Supreme Court. During a hearing regarding the suspension of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Chief Justice Surya Kant noted that the court had not approved modifications made to Form 6, fueling opposition claims of unilateral, unauthorized decision-making. RJD MP Manoj Jha stated that the court’s remarks rendered the commission’s current preparation suspect, insisting that free and fair elections are impossible under the current leadership.

Beyond immediate electoral disputes, the opposition targeted the BJP’s 'One Nation, One Election' proposal. Yadav characterized the policy not as a governance reform, but as a mechanism to consolidate power and evade the scrutiny that comes with repeated state-level electoral cycles. The march represents a critical escalation in the bloc’s 'Save Democracy' campaign, signaling a sustained effort to force greater transparency from the nation's highest poll body.
