Delhi police clash with Youth Congress protesters at Jantar Mantar

Fifteen Delhi police personnel sustained injuries, including bites, as a protest march led by the Indian Youth Congress spiraled into a confrontation on Sunday. Authorities detained 110 demonstrators after the group attempted to defy barricades while marching toward Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstration, spearheaded by IYC National President Uday Bhanu Chib, targeted the central government, with participants accusing officials of shielding Kumar from scrutiny. Chib criticized the heavy police deployment, claiming the administration sought to prevent peaceful assembly. Other party leaders, including National Secretary Roshani Jaiswal and legal coordinator Chitwan Godara, echoed calls for accountability, insisting that the government’s efforts to suppress dissent would fail.

The unrest follows a recent report alleging that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections regarding electoral roll decisions and technology systems. While the Election Commission dismissed these reports as a mischaracterization of standard administrative processes, insisting that final decisions were unanimous, the IYC has vowed to sustain its pressure until their demands for resignation are met.
