Thackeray Brothers Lead Protest Against Election Commission

Congress leader Husain Dalwai has thrown his party’s weight behind a joint protest march led by Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, targeting the Election Commission of India. The demonstration, which moved toward BMC headquarters, demands the resignation of Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the nullification of recent election results.

The Thackeray brothers argue that the ongoing Systematic Identification of Residents (SIR) exercise has disenfranchised 13 crore citizens, specifically targeting Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis, and Christians. Uddhav Thackeray characterized the march as a direct challenge to what he termed a dictatorial assault on democratic rights, alleging that the Home Ministry is leveraging the election body to undermine citizenship status. Raj Thackeray has specifically called for the total cancellation of the SIR process in Maharashtra, urging a nationwide shift back to paper ballots.

Beyond the SIR controversy, opposition figures are questioning statistical anomalies in Maharashtra, noting unexplained surges in voter counts between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. While the Election Commission maintains that its revision protocols are standard procedures designed to clean electoral rolls, Dalwai insists the current system is fundamentally compromised. The coalition of opposition leaders is now pressing for fresh elections, claiming that the current oversight body has lost its mandate to conduct fair, transparent polls.
