Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen confirmed that the opposition alliance solidified its strategy during a September 30 meeting, moving to confront what they characterize as a systemic erosion of democratic rights. The Mumbai march toward the BMC headquarters underscored the growing friction between regional leaders and the Election Commission. Uddhav Thackeray framed the protest as a direct challenge to a "dictator," alleging that 130 million names were purged from national electoral rolls, with specific exclusions cited in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Raj Thackeray bolstered these claims by demanding the total cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision in Maharashtra and a return to paper ballots, citing deep-seated distrust in current voting machine processes.
Beyond the street protests, the TMC is escalating its legal battle regarding parliamentary committee appointments and the status of defecting MPs. Sen alleged that the central government is systematically consolidating control over legislative oversight bodies, noting that opposition chairmanships have dwindled significantly since 2019. The party has escalated its grievances to the Supreme Court after failing to secure a resolution from the Chairman regarding 20 MPs who continue to identify as AITC members while aligning with the NDA. According to Sen, Abhishek Banerjee’s ongoing litigation highlights the broader struggle to enforce anti-defection rules and maintain constitutional accountability.
