Thackeray cousins unite for Mumbai protest against Election Commission

Conflict defines the streets of Mumbai this Sunday as estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray lead a joint protest march against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The rare political alignment targets alleged systemic irregularities in the electoral process, with organizers demanding Kumar’s immediate resignation to protect democratic institutions.

The demonstration, dubbed the 'Garjana Morcha,' marks a significant convergence of opposition forces, including the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, Congress, and NCP. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut described the rally as a revolt against what he characterized as a dictatorial hijacking of constitutional rights. Protesters argue that the current electoral framework suffers from deep-seated corruption, citing alleged vote-stealing and the compromising of the Election Commission’s independence.

Moving from the Metro station to the Municipal Corporation building, the march aims to amplify public discontent regarding the conduct of recent Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. Beyond the Election Commission, the protest serves as a broader platform for opposition grievances, ranging from the handling of public agitations to administrative accountability under the Union government. Supporters view the unified presence of the Thackeray leaders as a symbolic turning point, intended to signal that the movement to challenge the current administration is gaining national momentum.
