Why AI Adoption Often Fails to Improve SME Performance

For small and medium-sized enterprises, simply installing artificial intelligence is no guarantee of success. A study of 1,215 Indian firms reveals that general AI adoption shows no statistical link to operational agility, suggesting that digital transformation only drives efficiency when tools are embedded directly into strategic decision-making and governance.

Why AI Adoption Often Fails to Improve SME Performance

Samreen Akhtar of Saudi Electronic University analyzed World Bank Enterprise Survey data to track how 35.5% of surveyed firms integrated AI. The research highlights a critical disconnect: companies using AI for peripheral tasks report no significant improvement in their ability to handle demand surges. In contrast, businesses that integrate AI into their core strategy or compliance functions are nearly four times more likely to demonstrate operational agility.

The findings challenge the assumption that concentrated leadership automatically fosters technological advancement. Owner-managed firms—where the executive is also the top shareholder—were 70% less likely to apply AI to strategic decisions compared to companies with separated management structures. This suggests that while owner-managers may rely on personal experience for quick pivots, they often bypass the formal, data-driven analysis that AI provides.

Financial access remains a parallel but separate pillar of performance. While firms with bank loans or credit lines were over four times more likely to handle demand spikes, formal financing showed no correlation with AI integration. This indicates that capital and technology function as distinct levers for growth. For policymakers, the data suggests that tracking adoption rates is insufficient; true organizational maturity depends less on the presence of software and more on whether management grants technology a seat at the table in high-level decision-making.
