The Congress leadership confirmed the appointment of Pargat Singh on October 3, replacing the outgoing president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. General secretary K.C. Venugopal announced the shift, which signals a strategic reorganization of the state party apparatus as the 2027 Assembly elections approach.
Pargat Singh, who currently serves as the Jalandhar Cantonment MLA, expressed gratitude toward party leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi. In a statement following the announcement, he pledged to work with complete dedication to strengthen the party's foundation in Punjab. His wife emphasized that his transition from competitive sports to politics has been defined by a consistent ability to confront difficult situations, a trait she expects him to apply to his tenure as the provincial party chief.
