Pargat Singh named Punjab Congress chief in leadership reshuffle

Former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantt legislator Pargat Singh has assumed the presidency of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, stepping into the role vacated by Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. The appointment, confirmed by AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal, signals a shift in strategy ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections.

Warring’s departure followed his resignation on Friday, ending a tenure that began in 2022 after he succeeded Navjot Singh Sidhu. While the party leadership has expressed appreciation for his contributions, the transition follows persistent rumors of internal friction within the state unit. Despite the change at the top, the party confirmed that working presidents and committee chairpersons will remain in their positions to maintain continuity.

Speaking on the transition, Warring suggested the move might have been influenced by AICC state in-charge Sachin Pilot, though he stopped short of citing concrete evidence. During his final days in the role, Warring held discussions with Rahul Gandhi regarding the state's political landscape. Reflecting on his departure, the outgoing president expressed satisfaction with his time at the helm, describing his tenure as a period of service to be accepted with grace. The Congress party is currently recalibrating its approach in Punjab, aiming to reclaim power after its defeat to the Aam Aadmi Party in the 2022 polls.
