Pinarayi Vijayan demands CEC resignation after Jantar Mantar arrests

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has publicly demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, characterizing the detention of CPI(M) leaders and student activists at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar as a direct assault on democratic rights and a suppression of necessary demands for electoral transparency.

The protest, organized by the Students' Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India, defied prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Demonstrators gathered to challenge the Special Intensive Revision exercise, alleging systemic manipulation of voter rolls. Among those taken into custody by Delhi Police were senior CPI(M) figures MA Baby and Brinda Karat.

MA Baby accused the Election Commission of criminal conduct, specifically regarding the deletion of voter registrations, and insisted that the student-led movement would persist until Kumar is removed from office. Brinda Karat echoed these sentiments, calling for an immediate cessation of the current revision exercise and a legislative overhaul of the 2023 laws governing the Commission’s operations. Vijayan condemned the central government’s reliance on police force, asserting that state power cannot effectively silence public dissent regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
