Samajwadi Party MP Challenges Election Commission Impartiality

Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav has publicly challenged the Election Commission of India, asserting that concerns regarding its procedural integrity and internal decision-making are entirely valid. His remarks follow a pattern of criticism spanning several years, targeting both the commission's constitutional neutrality and its specific electoral rule amendments.

Yadav specifically cited the amendment to 'Form 6' as unconstitutional and argued that stripping field-level officials of their appellate powers regarding electoral rolls is legally indefensible. He claimed that the commission’s internal decision-making process lacks consensus among the three Election Commissioners, casting doubt on the body's collective impartiality.

Simultaneous unrest erupted across the country as activists and opposition groups mobilized against the commission's Special Intensive Revision exercise. In Mumbai, protesters gathered at Shivaji Park under heavy police surveillance. In Delhi, members of the Students’ Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India demonstrated near Jantar Mantar, calling for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Local authorities met the capital’s protests with strict measures, imposing Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to ban public assemblies. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation shuttered 11 major stations, including Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat, to contain the movement. These demonstrations signal a growing coalition between opposition parties and civil society organizations demanding greater transparency in electoral administration.
