Opposition parties challenge Election Commission neutrality

Under the shadow of heavy police deployment and prohibitory orders, opposition leaders gathered at Jantar Mantar and Shivaji Park on Friday to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, signaling a deepening confrontation between the INDIA bloc and the nation’s top poll panel over alleged electoral irregularities.

BRS leader V Srinivas Goud spearheaded the criticism, asserting that the Election Commission operates under government influence rather than maintaining its constitutional independence. Goud called for a transparent assessment of the commission's internal decision-making, arguing that public skepticism regarding the integrity of recent electoral processes must be addressed. BRS leader Jeevan Reddy echoed these concerns, alleging that voter lists are being manipulated to disenfranchise segments of the electorate opposed to the BJP.

In Mumbai, activists from the Cockroach Janata Party joined civil society groups at Shivaji Park to protest the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Simultaneously, in Delhi, members of the SFI and DYFI defied restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to stage their demonstration. Authorities responded by closing 11 Delhi Metro stations and tightening security across the capital. With the INDIA bloc scheduling further rallies for October 6 and November 1, the standoff over the commission's impartiality shows no signs of abating.
