INDIA Bloc Demands Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge leveled specific allegations regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, claiming the exercise resulted in the removal of 13.3 crore voters from the electoral rolls. According to Kharge, this mass deletion threatens the democratic rights of citizens and necessitates a full rollback to pre-revision lists to ensure fairness in future contests. He further noted that Kumar’s fellow commissioners have expressed internal dissent, reportedly writing 14 letters of concern over the past ten months.

The opposition alliance, representing nearly twenty political parties including the Samajwadi Party, AITC, and DMK, argued that the commission has failed to maintain the impartiality mandated by Article 324 of the Constitution. Beyond the demand for leadership changes, the bloc is pushing for stricter accountability mechanisms, simpler registration procedures for first-time voters, and a transparent appeals process for any voter deletions. Kharge emphasized that the commission must justify its administrative actions to regain public trust, suggesting that the current leadership has become a liability to the electoral process.
