Choksi, a primary suspect in the Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank fraud, originally alleged that New Delhi conspired with five individuals—including Hungarian national Barbara Jarabik—to forcibly render him from Antigua to Dominica in May 2021. He claimed he was lured to an apartment, assaulted, and illegally transported by boat as part of an extrajudicial operation to return him to India.
His case collapsed after the London High Court ordered him to deposit over Rs 4.5 crore to cover the legal costs of four male defendants, including Gurdip Bath, the St Christopher and Nevis high commissioner to India. When Choksi failed to secure the funds by the court's deadline, the judge noted that his claims relied entirely on hearsay without independent witnesses. Following the dismissal of the claims against the individual defendants, Choksi moved to discontinue the action against the Indian government and Jarabik entirely.
Currently, Choksi remains in custody in Belgium, where he is contesting an extradition order. His nephew and co-accused, Nirav Modi, continues to remain incarcerated in London while awaiting the conclusion of his own protracted extradition process.
