EIB and BNP Paribas Launch €2.8 Billion Grid Infrastructure Initiative

The European Investment Bank and BNP Paribas have finalized a risk-sharing pact designed to unlock €2.8 billion for European energy grid modernization. By providing targeted counter-guarantees, the institutions aim to resolve the liquidity bottlenecks currently hindering manufacturers tasked with producing essential electrical infrastructure components across the European Union.

The mechanism centers on a €350 million counter-guarantee from the EIB, matched by BNP Paribas to create a €700 million portfolio of bank guarantees. This arrangement allows manufacturers to secure the financial backing necessary to scale production as demand for grid expansion surges. Rather than direct lending, the structure acts as a financial multiplier, enabling companies to meet stringent guarantee requirements for large-scale industrial projects.

EIB Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle noted that this partnership builds upon previous joint efforts in the wind energy sector, reinforcing a broader strategy that saw the EIB commit €11.6 billion to grids and storage in 2025. Rodolphe Vergeaud of BNP Paribas emphasized that grid stability depends on the entire supply chain, asserting that the agreement directly bolsters the firms responsible for the physical hardware of the energy transition. This initiative operates under the EIB’s €1.5 billion Pan-EU Power Grid package, supported by the InvestEU programme to ensure that manufacturing capacity keeps pace with the continent's decarbonization goals.
