Moscow Extends Asset Seizures to European Retail and Food Giants

The Kremlin has placed the Russian subsidiaries of Nestle, Metro AG, and Auchan under temporary state management, escalating a campaign to strip European corporations of their ownership rights. Moscow frames these expropriations as asymmetric retaliation for the European Union’s ongoing support for Ukraine and its extensive sanctions regime.

Since the conflict began, Russia has moved to seize control of 135 firms linked to foreign entities, the vast majority being European. While early interventions focused on a smaller group of 22 Western companies, the net has widened significantly. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed these actions could be reversed, yet cited a total lack of constructive dialogue with Brussels as the primary obstacle to restoring corporate autonomy.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently escalated the rhetoric, accusing European nations of waging a direct war against Russia through intelligence sharing and weapon supplies. This stance mirrors the official justification for the seizures, which Moscow presents as a necessary reaction to the EU’s decision to freeze roughly €210 billion in Russian state assets. Despite the hardening stance toward European firms, American companies remain largely insulated from these specific measures, with Moscow keeping channels open for potential future engagement contingent on the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
