Mongolia Secures $100 Million ADB Loan to Bolster Disaster Resilience

The Strengthening Mongolia's Disaster Resilience Capacity Project aims to overhaul the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) by integrating artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and advanced geographic information systems. This digital upgrade is designed to provide officials with the precise data needed to anticipate threats before they escalate. Beyond high-tech monitoring, the funding—comprised of $48.5 million in regular resources and $51.5 million in concessional loans—will procure modern firefighting vehicles and search-and-rescue equipment to bridge critical operational gaps.

Local empowerment sits at the heart of this initiative. By 2031, the project intends to establish and train 200 community volunteer groups across 120 soums, ensuring that remote areas have a frontline defense. A new national training center will anchor these efforts, fostering a standardized approach to resilience. According to ADB Country Director John Juhyun Jeong, these investments are essential to protect long-term development from the increasingly severe wildfires, floods, and dzuds that threaten the country's economic stability.
