Essar Group Plans $18 Billion Steel Investment in Iowa

In a move framed as a major victory for American manufacturing, India’s Essar Group has committed $18 billion to U.S. projects, headlined by a massive steel facility in Iowa. President Donald Trump hailed the site as the largest steel plant in American history, targeting a production launch by 2030.

The project will be spearheaded by Mesabi Metallics, an Essar subsidiary based in Minnesota. The facility intends to anchor an integrated supply chain, utilizing iron ore from company-owned operations in Minnesota to produce 10 million tonnes of steel annually. Trump credited his administration’s 50 percent tariff on steel imports for the investment, asserting that the policy incentivizes companies to manufacture domestically rather than face import costs.

Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia praised the administration’s focus on industrial growth, while CEO Joe Broking emphasized the facility's strategic importance to the national defense, automotive, and infrastructure sectors. The announcement carries significant political weight in Iowa, a key battleground state, with high-profile Republican figures including Senator Joni Ernst and Governor Kim Reynolds appearing alongside the president. While the project aims for a full-scale opening in 2030, it represents a long-term play for the Ruia family-owned conglomerate to expand its global footprint, which already spans assets in India, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia.
