Araghchi Meets Qatari Mediators as Iran-US Talks Stall in New York

The meeting serves as a high-stakes exchange for messages regarding the conditions Tehran has set for de-escalation. While US officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner engaged in indirect talks with Araghchi last week, state news agency IRNA reported on Monday that the Iranian delegation has no further negotiations on the schedule before their planned departure for Tehran on Tuesday. Despite Trump telling Axios that he expects talks to resume soon, Iranian officials maintain they are waiting for a formal American response to their demands.

At the center of the impasse is the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor that carried one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas before the conflict began in late February. Iran’s current blockade is contingent on several demands, including a seven-day regional ceasefire, the unfreezing of overseas assets, the removal of oil sanctions, and the cessation of the US naval blockade. Although active hostilities have waned since the last US strike on September 1, Iranian forces persist in targeting commercial shipping, keeping global energy logistics in a state of volatile suspension.
