The account of these narrow escapes emerged during an interview with the Qatari outlet Al Araby. Alekasir, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, detailed a harrowing sequence of events following the February 28 bombardment that obliterated the Supreme Leader’s compound. While his father and several aides perished in the initial assault, Mojtaba Khamenei survived, only to be caught in a secondary strike on the hospital where he was being treated. He has not appeared in public since being moved to an undisclosed location.
Despite his absence, the Assembly of Experts moved to fill the power vacuum. Alekasir claims to have been the primary advocate for Mojtaba’s nomination, citing the younger Khamenei’s fitness for the role. The Assembly eventually confirmed the transition on March 8, with Mojtaba securing 50 of 59 votes, despite the Qom Secretariat—the body's headquarters—also facing military targeting. While President Masoud Pezeshkian recently asserted that the new leader is in perfect health, the discrepancy between official rhetoric and the reports of his near-fatal injuries continues to fuel speculation about the stability of the current Iranian leadership.
