At a groundbreaking ceremony in Chiayi, Lai emphasized that building an indigenous drone industry is no longer just a tactical preference, but a strategic necessity. This shift follows legislative approval of a NT$240 billion ($7.56 billion) budget dedicated to procurement and indigenous development over the next six years.

The government’s roadmap for 2026 includes a significant expansion of its arsenal, featuring over 600 surveillance drones and 40,000 coastal attack units. By fostering partnerships in North America and beyond, Taipei aims to position its hardware as a viable alternative for global allies seeking to decouple their supply chains from Chinese-made technology. The challenge now remains for the defense ministry to scale manufacturing capacity and integrate these new assets into the island’s broader military framework.
