The Iranian government, represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, had demanded the release of frozen assets and the removal of maritime restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz as preconditions for resuming negotiations. Waltz stated that the administration views these demands as an attempt to secure concessions before any diplomatic progress has been made, noting that Trump remains wary of Tehran’s commitment to future agreements. The president reportedly believes Iranian leadership is acting from a position of weakness following seven months of strikes by the US and Israel.
Araghchi countered these claims by labeling the US rejection as based on unfounded accusations, asserting that Iran is merely seeking the restoration of its sovereign rights. While Araghchi expressed skepticism regarding the current administration’s reliability, he stopped short of closing the door entirely on future dialogue. Despite the public impasse, reports suggest that indirect negotiations could resume as early as Monday, with Trump signaling that while he intends to reach an arrangement, he will not accept the terms currently proposed by Tehran.
