Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

The proposal, presented by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following his visit to the UN General Assembly, outlined a seven-day timeline to reopen the strait. According to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the plan required the U.S. to lift sanctions on Iranian oil, release frozen assets, and end the naval blockade. Iran’s conditions mirror a memorandum of understanding signed in June that collapsed shortly after inception due to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels.

Despite Tehran’s attempt to negotiate through Qatari intermediaries, the impasse remains rigid. Pezeshkian stated that while Iran remains at the table, a profound lack of trust in the United States persists. In response to the overture, Trump signaled his skepticism on social media, posting a map of the region labeled "Trump Strait" while reports suggest he may intensify the U.S. bombing campaign in the area. Meanwhile, Iranian officials, including Revolutionary Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi, maintain that punitive actions will continue until all seven of their conditions, including an end to hostilities in Yemen, are satisfied.
