US and India Near Completion of Long-Awaited Trade Pact

With negotiators claiming the deal is 90 percent finished, Washington and New Delhi are poised to finalize a bilateral agreement that has remained the most persistent obstacle in their diplomatic relationship for decades, potentially unlocking a new era of economic cooperation between the two global powers.

US and India Near Completion of Long-Awaited Trade Pact

A senior US State Department official indicated that only minor technical details remain, suggesting a formal announcement is imminent. This sentiment aligns with comments from India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who recently characterized the pact as largely complete. However, Goyal emphasized that New Delhi is holding out for specific competitive advantages in the American market before moving to full execution.

The foundation for this breakthrough was laid in February 2026 with an interim framework. Since then, pressure has mounted from industry leaders to finalize the agreement. Ambassador Atul Keshap, president of the US-India Business Council, has urged both governments to accelerate their efforts, arguing that lowering trade barriers and reducing tariffs will provide the necessary certainty to capitalize on the record-breaking investment levels seen throughout 2026. If successful, the agreement would resolve a structural trade impasse that has hindered the partnership for years.
