Tensions flare in Tamil Nadu as bypolls approach

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan dismissed the Chief Minister’s claims of an AIADMK-DMK nexus as an imaginary narrative, asserting that voters in the contested districts are rejecting TVK’s candidates. Sathyan specifically targeted the TVK's nomination of K. Maragatham Kumaravel, a former AIADMK MLA whose resignation necessitated the Madurantakam by-election, claiming that the party’s reliance on poached candidates would backfire at the ballot box.

DMK representative TKS Elangovan also weighed in, accusing the Vijay-led administration of failing to deliver on basic governance, citing insufficient water release for Samba crops as a primary grievance. While Vijay has framed the upcoming vote as a moral battle between the pure force of his party and the established evil forces of the DMK and AIADMK, the opposition remains unmoved. As the October 9 counting date approaches, the contest serves as a critical test for the TVK government following its victory in the April 2026 Assembly elections.
