The political firestorm stems from reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months concerning electoral database access. While the Election Commission dismissed these claims as routine administrative feedback rather than institutional dissent, the opposition remains unconvinced. Ramesh Chennithala, who oversaw Congress operations during the Maharashtra Assembly Election, described the results as a fraud facilitated by the Commission's bias.
Legal protections currently shield the CEC from criminal or civil proceedings regarding official duties, and removal requires a rigorous parliamentary process involving a two-thirds majority vote. Despite these hurdles, the opposition continues to link the Systematic Improvement of Electoral Roll (SIR) process to broader allegations of vote manipulation.
