Moitra’s participation follows her formal complaint filed at the Parliament Street Police Station, where she accused the CEC of unilateral decision-making and improper electoral roll management. The unrest stems from reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections 14 times over 10 months regarding database access and administrative procedures. While the Election Commission maintains these were merely standard internal queries, the opposition views the pattern as a systemic failure requiring Kumar’s resignation.

The political friction has triggered nationwide mobilization. In Chandigarh and Patna, authorities deployed water cannons to disperse Congress workers as demonstrations erupted across multiple states, including West Bengal, Assam, and Jammu and Kashmir. With the Congress Working Committee set to convene on September 29, party leaders are now weighing the possibility of an impeachment motion against the Commissioner in Parliament, signaling a sustained legislative challenge to the current leadership of the ECI.
