Blast Destroys Residential Building Near Athens Acropolis

The force of the blast ripped through the structure, leaving behind a skeleton of twisted metal and hanging concrete. Damage extended several blocks, shattering windows in nearby shops and hotels and damaging parked vehicles. Plaka, typically bustling with visitors to the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, was quickly choked with smoke as firefighters and ambulances navigated the narrow, debris-strewn streets.

Police spokeswoman Constantina Dimoglidou stated that the fire brigade is still conducting a full inspection of the site to ensure no one remains trapped. Rescuers pulled two women from an adjacent building, while a passer-by sustained injuries from the flying debris. Local resident Andreas Martzaklis described the intensity of the event, claiming the entire block seemed to heave from the force. Authorities report that at least five individuals were registered at the property, which included units used for short-term tourist rentals, but a definitive count of occupants at the time of the explosion has yet to be established.
